Police in Fort Collins are investigating a two-vehicle crash Thursday evening that left a 4-year-old dead.

The crash happened about 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Mulberry Street and the Northeast Frontage Road when a 2001 Ford Taurus turned in front of a 2005 Dodge truck and was broadsided.

The Ford was driven by Modesta Torres, 44, of Fort Collins, and the 4-year-old was her passenger, riding in the back seat. Both were transported to Poudre Valley Hospital, where the toddler died.

Torres was treated for moderate injuries and released.

The driver of the Dodge, Cody Dye, 21, of Fort Collins, was not injured, police said.

“The investigation is continuing and charges are pending,” police said. “Police do not believe either driver was impaired and are working to determine if speed or distraction contributed to the collision.”

The toddler’s identity will be released by the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, officials say.
