The theft of a car belonging to an injured Denver police officer — swiped while supporters held a tear-filled vigil for him, no less — was a blow to a family already suffering too much.
Thankfully, Denver police found Officer John Adsit’s car a day later.
The incident calls attention to the trauma the officer and his family have experienced and it reminds us the community could do more to assist them.
Officer Adsit was gravely injured on Dec. 3 when he was hit by a car while on bike patrol escorting high school marchers protesting police brutality.
He has endured multiple surgeries and been hospitalized since.
When an officer dies in the line of duty, memorial services draw law enforcement from around the state. Funerals deservedly are front-page news.
Here is an officer who was badly injured while on duty. He deserves a great deal more support from city officials, school leaders and the community.
Adsit’s trauma should stand as a reminder of the difficult job those in law enforcement face, which includes protecting marchers who are protesting the police.
