A motorist suffered serious head injuries in Aurora early Saturday when he turned his Mercedes SUV into the path of another SUV and his vehicle was broadsided.

After the collision, the man driving the other SUV, a blue Subaru Forester, jumped out of the vehicle and ran, according to a news release by Lt. Michael A. McClelland of the Aurora Police Department. That man has not been located.

The man in the Mercedes, who was not wearing his seat belt, was injured when his head slammed into the right side of the front windshield, McClelland said. The man, whose name has not been released, was in critical condition, the news release said.

The injured man was driving a green 2001 Mercedes SUV north on South Parker Road when he turned left at the 3200 block into the path of the Subaru.

The Subaru, which had the right of way, slammed into the side of the Mercedes, which started spinning, went over the curb, smashed through landscaping and stopped in the driveway of a Taco Bell.

The Mercedes driver’s impact with the windshield inflicted serious head injuries.

“The driver of the Subaru ran from the scene on foot, leaving the vehicle sitting in the roadway,” the news release said.

Police searched for the driver, including going to the registered owner’s address. The apartment was empty.

The southbound lanes of South Parker Road were shut down for several hours during the investigation.
