Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi (AP file)

Re: “Another perspective on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Dec. 21 letter to the editor.

In his Dec. 14 column, Ved Nanda expressed his optimism for the mandate from the people of India (“India’s Narendra Modi must make good on his promises”). Letter-writer Rajindar Singh is viewing India from a Western lens and seeing a host of problems with no hope, which is a biased view. The issues and problems that Singh highlighted have been in existence since 1947 in various forms. It is inappropriate to blame Modi for the same issues simply because they were not solved earlier. He doesn’t have a magic wand to solve them overnight.

Despite enormous challenges, India has achieved democratic maturity, and technological excellence in many fields, including space. Modi has initiated programs. Indian problems need Indian solutions, not Western solutions or interventions.

Singh would greatly benefit from reading “Breaking India” by Rajiv Malhotra to change his viewing lens.
