AURORA — It was rain- ing 3-pointers inside the Rangeview gymnasium Friday night. Regis Jesuit made 14 of them, although it seemed like 114. Regis took aim and drilled crosstown rival Rangeview 78-53 in a Class 5A nonleague game.
“We work on that all week, and our main goal is to shoot it well,” Bryan Staerkel said.
Staerkel made three 3s in the third quarter, and his team had seven over eight minutes. Now 10-0 and No. 1 in The Associated Press poll, Regis Jesuit isn’t surprised, Staerkel said, but there is work to be done.
Coach Ken Shaw said it’s early, but a methodical victory came with his team’s ability to minimize Rangeview’s quickness and competing inside. Balanced scoring helped. Kip Boryla (15 points), Staerkel (14), Taylor Kallsen (11) and Nolan Ebel (10) were backed by Geoff Kelly (eight) and Elijah Sanford (six).
Regis Jesuit gradually pulled away and scored 31 points in the third quarter.
“Rangeview (6-4) has a nice team; (the Raiders) can get back into it quickly, and that was a good win for us,” said Shaw, who dresses nine seniors, tops in his 40 years.
Coach Shawn Palmer’s team, led by Elijah Reed’s 12 points, didn’t shoot the ball well early (4-of-14).
