An Aurora man was convicted Friday in the 2013 death of an off-duty who was killed while riding a motorcycle.

Jemal Abdelkader Dawed, 39, was charged with the vehicular homicide of Kevin Wayne Denner.

According to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, on May 3, 2013, Denner was riding his 1999 Harley Davidson at East Belleview Avenue and South DeGaulle Street in Aurora, when Dawed, driving a Toyota Solara, failed to yield to oncoming traffic by making a left turn directly in front of Denner.

After hitting Denner, officials said, Dawed never stopped, dragging him some 21 feet. Aurora police responded to the scene and officers smelled alcohol on Dawed, who failed his roadside tests. Later, a blood draw showed Dawed had a blood-alcohol content of 0.091, above the legal limit of 0.080.

After three hours of deliberation, the jury found Dawed guilty of vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, reckless driving while under the influence, driving under the influence and failing to yield the right of way while making a left turn.

Dawed will be sentenced on March 31.
