A 22-year-old Wheat Ridge woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for in 2013, seriously injuring him.

Stephany Mary Harwood pleaded guilty to attempted child abuse in November, the 1st Judicial District Attorney’s Office said in a news release on Friday.

Harwood stabbed her son on a green belt path near West 48th Avenue and Otis Street, telling police that a man, who was an acquaintance, had attacked her and her son. In order to further the ruse, she also stabbed herself in the leg.

Law enforcement undertook a large-scale search for the suspect, during which time Harwood told police “many different stories about the man.”

Harwood said the man had threatened her and her family repeatedly over time, which authorities were never able to substantiate. Subsequently, investigators found most of the information Harwood told them was untrue.

“A neighbor of Harwood’s reported to police that earlier on the morning of the stabbings Harwood had told her that she dreamed that the man she later accused had stabbed her and her son,” the office said. “Eventually, Harwood admitted that she stabbed her son.”

Authorities found the stabbing was an attempt to frame a man Harwood knew.

Harwood’s son survived the stabbing and is in good condition, the office said.
