Holtzmann and Moody aren’t a couple of attorneys, but they can certainly lay down the law.

On Saturday afternoon and against an opponent that was superior in athleticism, Jake Holtzmann and Chris Moody took turns taking over for Chaparral in a 67-52 victory over host George Washington in Class 5A nonleague.

The two seniors combined for 48 of the Wolverines’ points, 32 after halftime, as they pulled away late to improve to 10-3.

“When they do that, take things over, it’s when we’re at our best,” Chaparral coach Rob Johnson said.

All told, Holtzmann, signed with the University of Denver, rolled to 26 points — 18 in the second half, 13 in the fourth quarter. He was 12-of-12 at the free-throw line. Moody scored 22 points — eight in the third quarter, 14 in the second half.

“Having Chris is awesome,” Holtzmann said. “To have that one-two punch, it’s hard to guard both of us.”

Said Moody: “When we play together like this, I really don’t feel that anyone can stop both of us.”

It was a game through three quarters. GW(6-9) bothered the Wolverines with its speed and quickness, as well as its ability to get to the basket repeatedly.

However, after Moody carried Chaparral in the opening minutes of the second half, Holtzmann’s turn came and included two large three-point plays inside.

GW, which started three underclassmen, ran out of firepower. The Patriots shot 1-of-13 from the floor in the fourth quarter and also had turnover issues.

“Good win for us,” Johnson said as his team heads into Continental League play this week.

Added Holtzmann: “We can play through adversity and we found a way to get it done.”
