A 4-year-old girl in Loveland died Wednesday after wandering away from her family and falling through thin ice on a pond.

Police said a preliminary investigation showed the unidentified child was playing at a playground while other members of her family watched a nearby soccer practice at the Loveland Sports Park at 950 N. Boyd Lake Ave. At one point, officials said, her father noticed that she was missing and went to look for her.

After finding her in the pond, the father pulled the girl from the water. The Loveland Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call at about 5:43 p.m. and emergency services personnel was dispatched. The communications center provided CPR instructions to people at the park until the emergency personnel arrived.

After their arrival, the medical personnel attempted to resuscitate the girl before transporting her to Medical Center of the Rockies. Attempts to save her life at the hospital were unsuccessful.

Loveland police said the investigation is ongoing.
