Police in Northglenn helped five residents, including three children, escape an early-morning house fire on Wednesday caused by discarded cigarettes.

The fire started at about 5 a.m. at a home on the 11300 block of Lincoln Drive, according to North Metro Fire Rescue. Neighbors called 911 after they saw flames on the outer part of the home.

Smoke and flames were visible when fire crews arrived, but the initial search of the home did not find anyone inside, according to North Metro Fire.

The fire was under control and crews were mopping up hot spots by about 5:20 a.m., firefighters said.

While damage to the home was limited to the home’s exterior and attic area, the residents have been displaced, according to Sara Farris, a spokeswoman for north metro.

“The cause of the fire was ruled accidental as a result of some discarded cigarettes in a nearby flower pot,” Farris said in a statement.
