Regarding home-rental services such as Airbnb and VRBO, do commercial enterprises belong in residential neighborhoods? Does a homeowner/long-term renter wish to live next to a motel? I chose not to in 2010, and obtained a “cease and desist” order from the Denver Board of Adjustments.
It seems that renting short-term rentals (less than month to month) is against Denver City ordinances that are in place to protect the integrity of residential neighborhoods. This seems to have been lost in Carroll’s piece. Evidently, he has not been kept up all night from loud “visitors” next door.
Some people might enjoy meeting new friends on a weekly basis, but I and my fellow neighbors did not. Enforce the laws and protect the neighborhoods.

This letter was published in the Feb. 1 edition.Thankfully, when my mother entered assisted living, we were able to supplement her retirement income and help pay her expenses by renting out her condo through VRBO. I carefully vetted each guest, managed expectations through the rental agreement, and maintained close communications before and during the stay. The nearest neighbor even provided local recommendations and advice to some of the guests, and we had no complaints from anyone.
People have many legitimate reasons for supplementing their income (low wages, unemployment, self employment, college expenses and retirement, to name a few) but may not want a long-term roommate. It would be very helpful to be able to rent out a spare bedroom, a condo or a home on a short-term basis. It also generates additional income for local municipalities and businesses, and creates a feeling of goodwill among our visitors, as owners can act as ambassadors for their communities.
