John Aguilar’s excellent article revisiting the future of the Cherry Creek Dam was smooth reading, but not a way of stirring engineers into action.
The 1973 storm that caused the lake to rise 15 feet above its normal level caught most of its weekend boaters completely by surprise. Since I had the pleasure of crossing the dam via its dam road each day on the way to work, I had a ringside seat to view an almost humorous phenomenon: The small pleasure craft (single-masted sailboats) in the small marina were securely anchored to the bottom of the lake; as the lake rose the boats rose with it until, at anchor rope?s end, their tails began to rise straight out of the water. And this was the scene that greeted us as we crossed the dam — quiet water with a dozen white tails sticking up into the air like a family of mallards, a sight not easily forgotten.
