Re: “Instead of free community college for all, focus on most needy,” Jan. 25 editorial.
President Obama has recently proposed giving students a two-year free education at community colleges. Why not go one step further and give them a two-year free education at community colleges in return for requiring them to perform two years of national service (military or civilian)?
There’s much work to be done in this country and young hands could be most helpful. In fact, many Americans (myself included) spent at least four years in the service in return for a four-year college education under the GI Bill. This way these college students would not be getting something for nothing; they would have earned it.

This letter was published in the Feb. 1 edition. Those who think we can lower the cost of college by subsidizing greater attendance may be unaware that, since we started subsidizing it, the cost of tuition has risen faster than the cost of any other consumer good or service.
Guaranteeing that the government will pay for anything is the best way to ensure that its price will rise. Is that what we want?
Germany has one of the most vibrant economies in the developed world, with a lower percentage of college graduates per population than the United States.
