A Grand County sheriff’s deputy was killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 34 near Granby.
The crash happened at about 6 a.m. The deputy, a 30-year-old woman, was transported to Middle Park Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m.
The deputy was not in her sheriff’s office vehicle and was off duty at the time of the wreck, according to Nowell Curran, Grand County emergency manager.
The deputy was driving a 2008 Nissan pickup truck southbound on U.S. 34 when she failed to negotiate a curve and moved into northbound traffic, slamming driver’s broadside into a truck, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
The identity of the deputy was not immediately disclosed, although a memorial fund was being created for the family.
“The Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the local public safety network, and the Grand County community lost a dedicated, law enforcement officer this morning,” Sheriff Brett Schroetlin said. “Law enforcement and public safety professionals share a unique family bond and are mourning together the loss of one of their own.
“These are hard calls to respond to and even harder when you know the person.”
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected in the crash and the deputy was wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said.
No other injuries were reported in the crash.
The sheriff’s office said it planned to release a statement Tuesday afternoon. The deputy was not immediately identified.
The state patrol said further information was not immediately available and that an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
