Sloan Gibson, deputy secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs, speaks to reporters on Dec. 17, 2014, about construction of the VA hospital in Aurora. (Brent Lewis, Denver Post file)

As a resident of Aurora, I see the unfinished Veterans Affairs hospital on a regular basis when I drive to DIA. The hospital is years behind schedule and millions over budget, but we need to finish it now for the vets who have fought for our freedom.

I was encouraged to see that Rep. Mike Coffman is continuing in this fight. Last week he introduced a new bill that would authorize the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to become the permanent construction project manager, and would raise the spending cap that Congress has put on the hospital. Without this spending increase, the construction of the hospital will again cease in June, putting many construction workers’ jobs in jeopardy. We can’t let this happen again.
