Six students were evacuated from a Denver Public Schools bus downtown on Thursday morning after smoke filled the vehicle, the city’s fire department said.

The bus was near 13th and Welton streets at about 7 a.m. when it filled with smoke, spokesman Mark Watson said.

It was not immediately clear why the bus filled with smoke. The vehicle’s engine compartment was opened and appeared to be venting before it was towed from the scene.

Denver Public Schools said none of the students were injured.

Watson said the driver was able to get all of the students off the bus.

A second bus was sent to the scene to transport the students. DPS security also responded.

Watson said Denver police are taking over the investigation into the situation.
