Firefighters responding to a blaze in a patio home at a senior living community in Golden on Friday afternoon found a woman dead.

The fire began at about 1:30 p.m. at the Ulysses Senior Community complex on the 1100 block of Ulysses Street, according to the Golden Fire Department.

The blaze, called in by a passerby, was active when fire crews arrived on scene, according to spokeswoman Karlyn Tilley.

“They found a deceased female inside,” Tilley said. “She was dead before they got there.”

Officials say it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the fire.

Investigators had to wait for the carbon monoxide levels inside the home to drop to a safe level before they could begin their investigation, officials say.

Because there is a fire and a death, this will be a joint investigation with the Golden Fire Department and Golden Police.

The fire was limited to the unit where the woman was found dead.

Tilley said the woman has not been identified.
