Getting your player ready...

Feb. 14:We like Angela Brown and love her idea of connecting the lines between opera and jazz. Opera is so buttoned-up and jazz so free-flowing, but it’s all music and everything comes down to the way a performer executes. A soprano with a serious résumé, Brown’s goal is to educate folks on the classical form, though she does it on their own terms, removing the intimidation factor. Her Valentine’s concert “Opera…from a Sistah’s Point of View” is in one of Denver’s formal halls, but is has genuine jazz cred, thanks to a back up band that includes popular saxophonist Nelson Rangell, along with bass-baritone Robert Johnson. Expect to hear a few classics, with some variations. 7:30 p.m., Feb. 14, Newman Center, 2344 E. Iliff Ave., on the University of Denver campus. 37.25-$77.25. 303-871- 7720 or . Ray Mark Rinaldi
