Amid frigid temperatures and falling snow, about 75 people gathered outside the Capitol building Sunday evening for a candlelight vigil for three Muslim college students who were shot and killed in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Muslim Student Association at Denver’s Auraria Campus organized the .

“We are here to bring awareness that this was a hate crime,” said Nadeen Ibrahim, Muslim Student Association president. “We need to ensure the safety of the Muslim community and those who wear the hijab.”

Denver resident Sean Sanford was one of a diverse group of citizens who joined in the ceremony that consisted of prayer and discussion about safety in the Muslim community.

“I want to be here to show that I stand in solidarity with those who are Muslim,” Sanford said.
