A Douglas County mother who in a botched 2013 murder-suicide attempt pleaded guilty on Tuesday and was sentenced to eight years in prison.
Erin Elizabeth Giberti, 37, made the plea during the first day of what was supposed to be her jury trial. The trial was vacated and she was immediately sentenced, according to the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Giberti’s sentence also includes 10 years of probation and bars her from contact with any children — including her own — throughout her punishment.
Giberti pleaded guilty to attempted reckless child abuse to cause death and child abuse causing serious bodily injury.
On Dec. 9, 2013, sheriff’s deputies found Giberti’s two young children standing in front their house in the 4900 block of Laurelglen Lane in Highlands Ranch. Deputies discovered Giberti sitting unconscious in a running vehicle in the home’s garage.
Giberti’s children were aged 7 and 4 at the time, court records show.
Deputies were called to the home on reports of a suicidal subject when they discovered the scene.
