Heavy snow began falling in the mountains Friday afternoon, as a large winter storm moved across the state.

Westbound Interstate 70 was closed from Georgetown to Silverthorne because of multiple accidents from 2 p.m. to about 4:30 p.m. The westbound Eisenhower Tunnel was also closed.

Traffic was moving very slowly, since the backup had grown to nealy six miles during the closure.

Also, CDOT said, safety metering is in effect for eastbound I-70 from Silverthorne to Eisenhower Tunnel, with periodic traffic stops because of high volume.

CDOT said road conditions were icy with poor visibility. Traffic was backed up for miles.

There is no estimated time of reopening.
