The first of the RTD's electric commuter rail cars for use in 2016, arrive at Union Station in Denver on Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at the new commuter rail platform. The cars, some of which will be traveling to Denver International Airport, are heavier and travel faster than light rail vehicles, but operate in a similar way, using overhead electric lines.

The Regional Transportation District has put out a warning to those who think about getting near the East Rail Line: The electricity is flowing.

RTD and the Denver Transit Partners are turning on the overhead electric power lines along the 22.8-mile line that runs between Denver Union Station and DIA. It is the start of a year-long testing program.

RTD is powering up the lines in sections as part of the electrification testing process, and soon the entire line will be live.

“These wires hold 25,000 volts of electricity and can be extremely dangerous, even fatal, if anyone comes close to them,” said Brian Middleton , RTD FasTracks East Rail Line project director. “We ask everyone to please stay away from the tracks and the wires, and never try to touch or throw anything at them.”

The East Rail line is expected to open in spring 2016.
