A train carrying more thqn 100 tankers crude oil derailed on Feb. 17 near Mount Carbon, W.Va., sending a fireball into the sky and threatening the water supply of nearby residents. (Chris Jackson, The Register-Herald/The Associated Press)
Re: “Oil train wrecks increase pressure for tougher safety rules,” Feb. 28 news story.
President Obama recently vetoed the Keystone pipeline bill that passed Congress. Now the administration is saying that we need tougher standards for railroads and tank cars to alleviate fire and spillage problems because of the greater number of train wrecks and derailments. It would seem that construction of pipelines could significantly reduce the danger of these increased problems with trains. Have we just come full circle or is there an agenda other than public safety under consideration here?
