Authorities in Colorado Springs responded Thursday morning after a distraught man called officials threatening to take his own life and then set his home ablaze.
First responders found a man dead and a home on fire. Police say the bomb squad was called to the home after possible improvised explosive devices were found there.
The home was declared safe on Thursday afternoon.
Police were called out to the home on the 2400 block of Tahoe Boulevard at about 8 a.m. after receiving the initial call from the distressed man.
“The home was on fire when officers and firefighters arrived,” police said. “After ensuring the exterior of the area was safe, firefighters addressed the house fire.”
Homes in the immediate area were evacuated as first responders worked to mitigate any explosive hazards, according to police. The evacuation order was later dropped.
Police told The Denver Post there were reports of shots fired at the scene.
The Colorado Springs Fire Department said the man found dead did not die in the fire.
Authorities have not released the man’s identity.
Images from the scene showed a badly charred house.
