McDonald’s says it plans to start using chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine. (Mark Duncan, The Associated Press)

Re: “McDonald’s chicken gets new standard: No human antibiotics,” March 5 business news story.

I’m lovin’ this! McDonald’s announced last week that it will phase out chicken raised with antibiotics used to treat humans over the next two years.

Because McDonald’s buys such a huge share of the nation’s meat, this commitment could push large chicken companies to make the switch to chicken raised without the routine use of antibiotics.

CoPIRG has been running a campaign asking McDonald’s to join the fight to save antibiotics, and we are thrilled by this news. Next we’ll join consumers nationwide in asking them to extend the policy to beef and pork.
