Re: “HOA Colorado moving closer to licensing HOA managers,” March 8 business news story.

Colorado legislators should deal with the issues raised in the The Denver Postap article about homeowner association management companies. But the article omitted some of the most important issues.

HOA management companies are mostly unregulated and allowed to do things like charge homeowners unjustifiably high fees when owners sell their houses. A “transfer fee” can be up to $1,500 for a minimal amount of paperwork the management company does in a few minutes.

Management companies are supposed to serve homeowners and protect their property values. But as a former HOA board member, I learned that state laws allow management companies to do the opposite in many cases.

Millions of Colorado residents live in HOAs. Legislators should find out what is happening in some of them.
