Interview with Michael O’Lear, president
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I started playing paintball in 1988 and fell in love with the sport. I started as a recreational player and worked my way up to a pro-level team. I enjoy working for myself and being around paintball. I’m a single dad with a special-needs autistic son, and the business allows me the flexibility to accommodate my family. Plus, I have a true passion for the sport and absolutely love the game.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: We have 27 years of experience in paintball. I have a background in customer service. At the shop, we believe in a no-pressure approach to sales and have many loyal customers, going back to the start of the business in 2001. We are truthful and not always looking for the sale. At the playing field, we believe in safety first and then fun. We have many first-time players and host a lot of birthday parties, alternative bachelor parties and family get-togethers. We even host a ladies day the first Sunday of every month that allows women try it out with free entry and free rental for the day.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love being around paintball and all the players. It is so much fun to watch the excitement of new players as they get hooked into the sport. Some of the very best friends I have ever had, I met through paintball and through owning these businesses.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: Our biggest challenge is Internet shoppers. We are a locally owned and operated business that continually gives back to the players and our community through sponsorships and charity events. It seems many people do not understand that sales tax goes back into the community that they live in — road maintenance, education, parks and community projects. We also offer the ability to have face-to-face Q&A and customers can physically touch the many products offered.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: We are family owned and operated mom-and-pops-and-son business.
