Smoke billowed from a top-floor window of an Arvada apartment building Saturday afternoon, part of a large blaze that sent Arvada firefighters scrambling to the scene.

Firefighters encountered “heavy fire” upon arrival at the building, on West 59th Place at Miller Street, about a quarter mile west of Kipling Parkway, according to the Arvada Fire District.

One apartment in the three-story building was damaged in the fire, though no one was in the unit at the time and there were no reported injuries to people. A cat died in the apartment. Three residents of the apartment were displaced.

Arvada Fire spokesman Scott Pribble said “discarded smoking materials” are believed to have started the fire. It was fueled by a propane cylinder on the apartment’s balcony, which likely caused an explosion that neighbors reported hearing.
