Dry air and strong winds are likely headed to northern Colorado on Tuesday, causing officials to issue a fire watch.
Sustained wind gusts of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts as strong as 55 mph could descend on the northeast Colorado plains Tuesday, said Lisa Kriederman, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder.
Along with heavy winds, the humidity is predicted to be in the low teens, Kriederman said, meaning the air will be dry.
“With those conditions and the winter-time grasses that haven’t really greened up yet, if a fire starts, rapid fire growth could occur,” Kriederman said.
Right now, the weather service has only issued a fire weather watch which Kriederman said means these conditions are likely.
On Monday, she said the weather service will have a better idea if the conditions will occur, in which case a red flag warning will be issued.
