Denver Post Columnist Mark Kiszla for why the Colorado Rockies should get minor league pitcher Jonathan Gray in the lineup sooner rather than later.
On The Sports Show with Woody Paige and Les Shapiro, Kiszla reiterated his point, saying that though the team would be rushing Gray’s development if they plug him in the starting lineup, he’s the team’s best chance to win.
The Rockies shocked the baseball world, creating a void in an already suspect group of Colorado pitchers.
Gray is the answer according to Kiszla but the columnist doesn’t believe he’s the only one who thinks so. Kiszla said he thinks Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss feels the same way.
“He’s ready because the Rockies want to win now. He gives them best chance to win now,” Kiszla said. “Would it be rushing him from Double-A to the majors? Absolutely it would be, but I get the distinct impression that Walt Weiss believes that Jon Gray gives them the best chance to win now.”
Kiszla said he loves to watch fellow pitcher Eddie Butler and Gray sit side by side and play video games on their cellphones, showing that they are “young men who still do young-men things,” but they could have a big task ahead of them. Kiszla said even Rockies’ star players Carlos Gonzales and Troy Tulowitzski know that to win in a tough National League West division, they will need great pitching from young players like Gray and Butler.
