A Denver UberX driver has been charged with three crimes after he allegedly tried to break into the home of a passenger he had dropped off at the airport.

Gerald Montgomery, 51, was charged with second-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools and attempted first-degree criminal trespass, according to the Denver District Attorney’s office.

Montgomery is out of jail on a $10,000 bond, and his next court appearance is at 8:30 a.m. on April 14.

Montgomery is accused of dropping off a passenger at Denver International Airport and then returning to her home where he tried to break in through a back door.

A roommate was at the home near the University of Denver and called police. The passenger sent her roommate a copy of her receipt with Montgomery’s picture on it, and that helped identify him, according to an arrest affidavit.

Uber in the investigation

Uber drivers operate their own vehicles and are not subject to the same regulations as taxi drivers. Passengers hire drivers through an app, and Uber says its drivers are thoroughly screened with driving and criminal background checks.

Montgomery’s passenger received a refund.
