Re: “Windsor High School Confederate flag flap,” March 31 letters to the editor.

As a point of historical clarification, letter-writer Angelia McLean is not correct in saying that the Civil War was about slavery and to say anything else is “a sign of ignorance and bigotry.” While there is no doubt that a major underlying cause was slavery, President Lincoln’s main objective in leading the nation into war was to prevent the secession of the Southern states and to preserve the United States as one country. This was first and foremost his goal, one which thankfully was attained.

When addressing the issue of the Confederate flag, letap keep emotions out of it and stick to the facts. The Civil War was fought mainly for economic reasons. Slavery was its own issue. To get the Northern border states to join the Union, they were allowed to keep their slaves. The Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln only freed the slaves “in the rebellious states.” The general misconception that this document freed all slaves is incorrect. This issue was corrected years later.
