Interview with Susan Peppel, owner
Q: How did you get involved in this business?
A: I started my business in 1971 making jewelry. After a few years making and selling jewelry, I began learning to make stained glass windows. I really enjoyed creating windows for homes and businesses. My jewelry store evolved into a stained glass store about 1980. I still make jewelry, but now I make it out of glass. I have always wanted to be an artist, and this has become my way of expressing my art.
Q: What distinguishes you from other businesses in your category?
A: I think I am the only stained glass business that does custom work for homes, not only windows, but I also custom make gifts. I make custom clocks, night lights, candle holders, card holders, mirrors, sun catchers, boxes, wedding gifts and many other creations. I will make anything a customer requests. I don’t know of any other business that is so customized.
Q: What do you like best about your line of work?
A: I love creating beautiful pieces for homes. It makes me feel good to know that my art is appreciated daily in someone’s home. I enjoy the whole process of creating a custom window or gift. From speaking with the customer to understanding exactly what they want, to drawing the pattern, picking the right glass for the project and then actually making the piece.
Q: What is your business’ biggest challenge?
A: I work by myself, so sometimes it’s a challenge to keep up with the demand.
Q: Something people might be surprised to learn about you or your business:
A: I think people would be surprised that I do work by myself. Not only do I make all the stained glass pieces, but I also run the store six days a week.
