First off, it’s not giant, at least not size-wise.
In fact, Bobbi Conner’s “The Giant Book of Creativity for Kids” (Shambhala Publications, 2015) is perfectly sized — easy for a busy parent to grab, hard for them to drop on their foot and priced within reach. It’s also just what the pediatrician ordered for parents looking ahead to Kiddo’s first summer vacation with a little bit of trepidation.
That doesn’t mean its 370 pages aren’t crammed with ideas to keep the creative energy of children ages 2 to 12 headed in positive, unplugged directions.
Scary dreams? Help your child draw a big guard animal on a giant piece of butcher paper. If your kid is a prodigy at pretend — and nearly all pre-schoolers are — make a no-sew tutu, superhero cape or butterfly wings. If your child becomes rapt when the music’s on, tap the list of toddler-friendly musical instruments. Challenge them to write giant letters in dance moves or put on a show as their favorite animal.
Perhaps the best part, this book reminds grown-ups of the spirit of play that lurks within them.
