The National Weather Service in Boulder has issued a winter-storm warning from Thursday evening through late Friday for the northern Colorado high country and foothills, where up to 3 feet of snow might fall.
The warning targeted areas of Jackson, Larimer, Grand, Boulder, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Summit, Park and Douglas counties. Over that span, the weather service says high-altitude areas could see 1 to 2 feet of snow, with locally higher amounts up to 3 feet.
“Some areas along the Front Range urban corridor may see from 2 to 4 inches of wet snow with higher amounts possible near the foothills and over the Palmer Divide,” the service said in a bulletin. “If temperatures end up being a few degrees colder than currently forecast, then the potential for heavy snow would increase.”
On Thursday, a mix of rain and snow is likely, with a high of 44 degrees, forecasters say. On Friday, a rain-snow mix is again likely, with temperatures topping out at 46 degrees.
The strongest bands of precipitation are expected between Thursday evening and Friday night.
The chance of rain and snow in Denver continues into Sunday night, according to the weather service.
The Colorado Avalanche Information Center warns that the snowfall could create dangerous conditions in the mountains and could leave slopes vulnerable to slides.
