Nolan Arenado’s diving catch into the stands at AT&T Park on Tuesday has already been dubbed by many as the catch of the year in Major League Baseball. The two-time Gold Glove third baseman made a running, over-the-shoulder grab of Gregor Blanco’s pop-up in foul territory, making the catch before landing on the tarp, face-first, and into the front row of the stands. Then, from his knees, he turned around to attempt to throw out a baserunner at third.

The catch — including Walt Weiss’ — and even drew comparisons to Derek Jeter’s famous catch in 2004, against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium. Jeter sprinted into foul territory to snag Trot Nixon’s pop-up and dove into the stands, emerging with the ball and bruises all over his face.

On Wednesday, spoke with Arenado’s Rockies teammates to get their take on which catch was more impressive. For comparison’s sake, we decided to take it a step further: Here are both diving catches, side by side.
