About 10,000 people gathered in City Park for the annual Walk MS Denver event on Saturday.
The walk was the largest Walk MS event in the nation, and participants are on track to raise $1 million for support programs, services and research to help the more than 100,000 people affected by multiple sclerosis in Colorado and Wyoming, according to a news release from the Colorado-Wyoming chapter of the National MS Society.
Floods of people dressed in orange — the organization’s signature color — gathered on the east lawns of the park.
Several friends and family members raised donations as teams and walked together wearing custom T-shirts and costumes. Most people on their bibs wrote messages about whom they were supporting and pinned them on their shirt.
The messages listed the names of loved ones and nicknames of friends. Some of them had one name; others had a list.
“I’m walking for: My dad” one tag read.
“I’m walking for: My mom. I miss you” was written on another.
Throughout the massive crowd, participants surrounded by supporters wore green shirts with bold letters on the back that read: “I’m the reason we walk.”
There is no known cure for MS, which affects the central nervous system.
