Denver weather: Yes it’s true — forecast calls for “rain-snow mix” Saturday night

Even the gurus at the National Weather Service in Boulder would not be so cruel as to predict that there will be snow on the ground Sunday on Mother’s Day.

However, there is a possibility for below-freezing temperatures early Monday morning.

“That might be a concern for the urban gardener,” said meteorologist Robert Koopmeiners.

With rain dominating the forecast between Thursday and Saturday, the most the weather service would commit to for late Saturday is a rain-snow mix, with the latter a possibility if the temperatures were to dip below freezing.

“And looking at it now, it’s right in the range where it could go either way,” Koopmeiners said. “It probably will (snow) in the mountains. But in the metro area, even if it did snow, it probably wouldn’t stick.”

But if Monday’s dawn is clear enough, Koopmeiners said, it indeed could be cold enough to cause freezing. That would just be the latest body blow to the area, which has been absorbing weather haymakers all week.

On Wednesday, a flood advisory was issued for the Pueblo area as heavy rains moved through. Heavy rain also was hitting Colorado Springs, with some street flooding. In the mountains, there was a flash flood warning for western Eagle County, central Delta County, Mesa County, northwestern Pitkin Count, northwestern Gunnison County, southwestern Routt County, central Rio Blanco County and Garfield County.

The good news, Koopmeiners said, is that as Monday goes on, things will improve to the point that the forecast actually includes phrases like “drying out.”

“Later Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, it all looks good,” Koopmeiners said.
