DURANGO, Colo. (AP) — Tourists looking to take a historic trip to the old mining town of Silverton are out of luck as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has canceled service after falling rock broke the rail.
The Durango Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1GSoZrm ) that service was suspended Thursday for an undetermined period of time, but there is a chance it could be renewed by Saturday. The train only reopened for the season last week.
A number of boulders broke the rail, which will have to be replaced, and the rail bed repaired.
The 600 residents of Silverton are dependent on tourism for survival, much of which comes from the train.
