DaVita HealthCare Partners said last Monday it will pay up to $495 million to settle a whistle-blower lawsuit accusing the Denver company of defrauding the federal Medicare program of millions of dollars. (RJ Sangosti, Denver Post file)
Re: “DaVita settles suit; Denver-based kidney care firm to pay $495M in whistle-blower case,” May 5 news story.
At last, the other shoe has dropped. DaVita, the Denver-based kidney care firm, has agreed to pay $495 million to settle another whistle-blower case in which the company was accused of defrauding the federal Medicare program. According to The Postap story, DaVita has already paid $466 million to settle similar cases, again involving charges of defrauding the federal government.
I have followed this saga in the business pages of The Post and also noticed the frequent mention of DaVita sponsorships of various local charitable events in The Postap society columns. I’ve wondered how so many local charitable groups could continue to accept funds and sponsorships from this company.
Throughout, DaVita has not admitted to any wrongdoing. Does that make it OK for non-profit groups that are supposed to be doing such good work in our community to accept funds from such a source? I think not. Itap tainted money.
