Colorado Senate Bill 268, which would have made it murder to kill a fetus, included specific language that protects mothers who choose to terminate a pregnancy or medical personnel who are asked to perform an abortion. The bill was voted down by a House committee earlier this month. (Denver Post file)
Re: “Modest progress for 2015 Colorado General Assembly,” May 8 editorial.
One major issue that you missed, in your editorial on the 2015 Colorado legislative session, was the extreme polarization of the Democratic senators and representatives on “life” issues. Their stance does not reflect the views of rank-and-file Colorado Democrats, much less the general Colorado public.
The most brazen example of this divide pertained to the Unborn Victims of Violence bill (Senate Bill 268). The bill would have recognized both victims when a pregnant woman is assaulted and her fetus is killed in the course of a violent crime. Democrats killed this bill along strictly partisan lines. During testimony on the bill, they refused to acknowledge the humanity of the fetus but cynically regretted the “loss of pregnancy.”
Intellectually honest pro-choice advocates acknowledge both a woman’s right of autonomy and the competing right to life of the developing human being.
Colorado’s Democratic legislators think that if they ignore the scientific realities of pregnancy, they can protect the interests of their NARAL and Planned Parenthood benefactors.
