A toddler at the center of a child abuse investigation in Greeley has died.

The 2-year-old boy was found Monday afternoon unconscious and critically injured at his family’s Greeley home.

Michael Lara was taken to the North Colorado Medical Center then flown to Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora. He died of his injuries early Wednesday, according to a Greeley Police Department news release.

John Melvin White, 33, on suspicion of child abuse.

White, the boyfriend of the boy’s mother, was living with them in a trailer home in the 200 block of North 35th Avenue. He was caring for the child while the boy’s mother was at work.

An investigation is ongoing, and the Weld County district attorney’s office is reviewing the case and will decide whether additional charges will be filed.

White remains in the Weld County Jail in lieu of $150,000 bail.
