
A male University of Denver freshman is hospitalized in serious condition after he was taken to a detoxification center on Sunday, authorities say.
The student is paralyzed, according to a 9News report. The name of the student has not been released.
The young man remains in serious condition, according to a news release Wednesday afternoon by Denver Health Medical Center.
“This is a tremendously difficult circumstance and our hearts are with the patient and his family,” a hospital news release said. “We would caution the public about forming any conclusions about this situation and ask that (the family’s) privacy be respected.”
The DU student came home to Johnson-McFarlane Hall about 3 a.m. Sunday, said Ben Gerig, university spokesman.
“The student appeared to be intoxicated,” Gerig said. “I don’t know the .”
The dormitory’s residential life director called Campus Safety, which in turn called paramedics, which called Denver CARES, an alcohol and drug detoxification center run by Denver Health, he said.
The student was later taken to Denver Health Medical Center, where he is currently undergoing treatment, Gerig said.
“We’re taking this incident very seriously and helping the family any way we can,” Gerig said.
Family members of the freshman student called the university on Tuesday and reported that , he said.
The family requested information about university protocol under such circumstances, Gerig said. He said the university followed its protocol for intoxicated students.
