A California woman stopped last year on Interstate 70 in Clear Creek County with nearly 28 pounds of methamphetamine was sentenced Monday to eight years in prison.

Jeannette Aguilar, 29, of Coachella, Calif., pleaded guilty in March to possession of methamphetamine with intent to manufacture and distribute.

Aguilar was stopped last September for changing lanes without signaling as she headed eastbound on I-70 just west of Jefferson County, prosecutors said in a news release Tuesday.

“When the stories of Aguilar and her (sister), Luz Maria Aguilar, did not match, the patrolman called for back up and initiated a search of (their) vehicle with a drug-sniffing dog,” the release said. “That search turned up 27.7 pounds of methamphetamine in 24 packages, 12 each from the rear wheel-wells of the vehicle.”

Authorities estimated the street value of the drugs at roughly $300,000.

“Interstate highways continue to be the pipelines through which illicit drugs criss-cross Colorado,” Bruce Brown, 5th Judicial District Attorney, said in a statement. “There are drop zones along our roads and the meth drips down into our communities and keeps those addicted in the throes of the disease.”
