A sinkhole in Sheridan swallowed a police SUV early Friday when the road under the vehicle collapsed into a hole roughly 15 feet deep, forcing an officer inside to crawl out onto the roof to safety.

The hole opened up at about 2:15 a.m. near the intersection of West Oxford Avenue and Natches Court where the officer, a police sergeant, was patrolling.

“As the sergeant entered the intersection, the road gave way due to a massive sinkhole,” police said in a news release. “The road collapsed around the police car and the car ended up in a hole.”

The sergeant sustained minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital, police said.

Oxford Avenue is closed from South Santa Fe Drive to Clay Street until crews repair the hole, police said.

“Xcel Energy will be responding to shut off a gas line before the car can be removed,” police said.

Officials did not have an estimate for when the repairs would be complete.
