Colorado prison officials said Tuesday that the death of a 25-year-old inmate Saturday who was being held at a high-security prison on the Eastern Plains is being treated as a suspected homicide.
Information has been shared with the 18th District Attorney’s Office and a suspect has been identified, officials announced.
Adrienne Jacobson, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Corrections, said in a news release that the coroner’s office is conducting a post mortem examination to determine the cause of death of Joshua Edmonds.
Investigators with the Office of the Inspector General continue to work in conjunction with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to investigate the death.
Evans was serving a 15-year sentence for burglary with explosives or a weapon and was housed at the state’s prison in Limon.
Colorado Springs police arrested Edmonds in April 2010. He entered a plea bargain in which he pleaded guilty to first-degree burglary.
Burglars are typically not sent to Limon, which houses some of Colorado’s most dangerous criminals, including killers and gang leaders.
“He would have had to earn his way into Limon,” Jacobson said on Saturday.
