Re: “Consider an affordable college over a prestigious one,” June 9 guest commentary.

If cost was one’s only concern when selecting a college, I would agree that a low-cost college or university is enough to thrive in a successful career. However, as a first-generation American and alumna of one of the “prestigious” colleges discussed in Greg Salsbury’s specious op-ed, I can attest that attending a college for reasons beyond only cost can enhance your career and can embellish every cornerstone of your life.

My college’s academic rigor, small class sizes, and accessibility to world-renowned professors contributed to my lifelong thirst for a well-rounded perspective of the world. In addition to my own hard work, my life has been bolstered by the name of my college on my resume, the vast array of supportive and helpful alumni, and the fact that the faculty and staff at my alma mater are still genuinely interested in my success.

Indeed, graduating from any college will open a door full of professional opportunities; however, where you went to school may allow you to open your door a little wider than others. In this competitive world, that may be the edge you need.

I wholeheartedly agree with Greg Salsbury, president of Western State Colorado University in Gunnison. In 1970 I received my bachelor’s degree in geology from Western State. Upon graduation, I attended the University of Arizona, in Tucson, where I earned my master’s. Later I earned a Ph.D. at the Colorado School of Mines. My Western State education has served me well. I have worked my entire career as a geologist with no regrets — or any education debt.
