Federal authorities have charged a 29-year-old Denver man, purportedly a member of a city gang, with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Sean Jovan Swanson, who federal prosecutors say is a Tre Seven Crip, was first arrested by Denver police in a case later handed over to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Swanson was initially arrested on suspicion of felony aggravated robbery in connection with a May 1 home invasion in which he allegedly pistol-whipped a victim. He was taken into custody May 5 at the Timbers Hotel.

Colorado’s U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release Friday that Swanson tried to flee as police moved in to arrest him. Investigators found a stolen, loaded handgun in his backpack, authorities say.

Swanson was convicted of three felonies in the Denver area between 2003 and 2011, including for robbery and a previous conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

“Swanson was on federal supervised release … at the time of his arrest,” the release said.

The charge against Swanson follows the federal Denver gang members over the .

Swanson, who is being held at Denver’s downtown jail, faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000 if convicted.
