Long lines to get into Cherry Creek State Park that vexed boaters Saturday are expected to be even worse Sunday.

Busy summer weekends aren’t unusual at the reservoir, but it is magnified now because flooding has closed the west boat ramps at Cherry Creek State Park and all boat ramps at Chatfield State Park.

Park officials have been anticipating more traffic at Cherry Creek because it is the only option for boaters if they don’t want to venture outside the metro area.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is still asking boaters to anticipate four to five hours for launching this weekend.

On Saturday, the east boat lot at Cherry Creek reached capacity before 10 a.m. Boaters were forced to wait to launch their boats until a spot opened up in the lot.

Josh Karsh and his family were supposed to camp at Chatfield, but flooding dashed those plans. The Karshes decided to go to Cherry Creek instead. “You gotta get here bright and early,” he said.

Metro-area boaters are encouraged to check out Boyd Lake State Park and Jackson Lake State Park instead.
