People file into the Arapahoe County Justice Center as the doors open in the morning, June 16. University psychiatrist Dr Lynne Fenton, not in photo, who treated James Holmes while he was a student at the University of Colorado testified Tuesday. (RJ Sangosti, The Denver Post)
It appears from reading opinions and comments by watchers of the Aurora theater shooting trial in The Denver Post that many people are trying to understand and make sense of James Holmes’ illogical, irrational and contorted thoughts, ideas, answers, plans and actions.
I want to remind people that this man has a mental illness — more precisely, schizophrenia, a brain disorder, characterized by disturbed and abnormal thinking processes, often associated with paranoia and delusions.
To quote my psychiatry professor while in medical school: It is pointless to try to understand and make sense of the thoughts of any schizophrenic patient.
Roswitha Moehring, M.D., Denver
